A large commission succeeds or fails on the brief. These are the stages worth insisting on.
Deity, height, pose, mudras, number of accompanying figures, finish and the date the temple needs it installed. Written, not verbal.
Approve a drawing or reference before carving begins. Corrections at this stage are free; corrections in stone are not.
For large pieces the block is chosen for size, grain direction and absence of flaws. Ask which block was selected and why, and request photographs.
Rough blocking, detailing and polishing are natural checkpoints. A workshop that sends progress photographs is easier to work with and reduces surprises.
Inspect or request detailed photographs of the face, hands, ornaments and base. Confirm the join locations if the statue is carved in sections.
Crated, foam-moulded and insured. Confirm who handles the final lift into the sanctum and whether the route has been verified.
Deity, height, pose, mudras, number of figures, finish and the required installation date — in writing, with a drawing approved before carving.
Agree carving milestones and request photographs at the blocking, detailing and polishing stages.
The temple or its contractor usually handles the final lift and placement. The workshop supplies lifting points and installation guidance.
