How to size a temple murti against the sanctum ceiling, viewing distance and altar depth, with a practical reference.
How to size a temple murti against the sanctum ceiling, viewing distance and altar depth, with a practical reference.
Temple murti proportions follow the space they are seen from, not a single standard.
Viewing distance | Suggested deity height |
|---|---|
Up to 5 ft (intimate shrine) | 1.5–2.5 ft |
5–10 ft | 2.5–4 ft |
10–20 ft (hall) | 4–6 ft |
20 ft+ (large hall) | 6 ft and above |
Deity height plus base plus the tallest festival crown must clear the sanctum ceiling with a working margin for dressing.
Depth must hold the base, the offering area in front, and space for the priest to work. Larger deities need disproportionately deeper altars.
Fix one proportion standard before carving so the main deity, consorts and attendants stay consistent, now and in future additions.
Confirm finished weight before building the plinth, and verify the delivery route can take the largest single piece.
As a guide: 1.5–2.5 ft for an intimate shrine, 2.5–4 ft at 5–10 ft viewing distance, 4–6 ft for a hall, and 6 ft+ for very large halls.
Enough for the base plus the tallest festival crown, with a working margin so the priest can dress the deity comfortably.
So that consorts and attendant figures added later match the main deity in scale and style.
