Weight is the practical constraint most buyers forget. These are realistic ranges for solid marble murtis by height.
Height | Typical weight | Practical placement |
|---|---|---|
6–9 in | 1–3 kg | Small shelf or niche |
12 in | 4–7 kg | Standard mandir shelf |
18 in | 9–15 kg | Sturdy plinth or cabinet |
24 in | 18–30 kg | Dedicated base, two-person lift |
36 in | 45–80 kg | Floor-mounted, reinforced base |
48 in+ | 90 kg+ | Structural planning required |
These figures vary with the deity, the thickness of the block and the base.
Glass shelves and floating mantels are usually not suitable for anything above a small murti. If you are placing the idol on furniture, check the manufacturer's load rating and put a rigid board under the base to spread the weight.
Always lift from the base, never from an arm, crown or ornament. Above roughly 20 kg, use two people. For permanent installations, plan the route before the murti arrives — doorways and stairs are the usual bottleneck.
Weight drives freight cost for larger statues, and it is the reason crated packing is built around a rigid base. For bulky pieces, air-freight chargeable weight is often based on volume rather than actual weight.
A solid marble murti around 12 inches tall typically weighs 4 to 7 kg, depending on the deity, block thickness and base.
Only a small, light murti. Most glass shelves are not rated for the weight of a 12-inch solid marble idol. Use a rigid board to spread the load.
Lift from the base only, never from arms or crowns. Above about 20 kg, use two people and clear the route first.
